There are a ton of web hosts out there. Some are good. Most are mediocre. Some are downright awful. The purpose of this article is not to give you a list of who I like and who I don't like, but to talk to you about what you need to be thinking about when choosing a web host.
There are several issues you need to be aware of when choosing a web host. Reliability and customer service are two of the most important.
Did you know that some web hosts don't even own their own servers? They are just virtual web hosts renting space on someone else's server.
I guess that's okay, if it's done right. I've never used such a web host, because I don't like the fact that the company I'm paying money to isn't in total control over what happens with my server space.
Let me give you a for instance.
I use a certain web host that I've been completely happy with. I've used them for the past two years, and they've worked out great. There was one time when one of my websites went down and I couldn't figure out the problem. I actually called my web host.
Yes, they were there at four in the morning fixing the problem. (I take Ben Franklin's early to bed, early to rise as gospel!)
Apparently, they had been growing so fast, they just outgrew their server space. And there they were in the middle of most people's night adding more capacity.
Things happen in business. I understand that. Doing all you can to fix the problem is all I ask. My web host passed the test, so I continue to stay with them.
Had they not owned their own computers, this might have become a real problem--for me! Look, my websites go down, I potentially lose thousands of dollars.
